Great Wall Motors GW4D20 Diesel Turbocharged Engine

On November 12, 2010, Great Wall Motor (GWM)’s new diesel-powered “Green (Lvjing) 2.0T” engine (Codenamed GW4D20 series) media conference was held in Baoding China. Green 2.0T was the first to assemble Haval H5 European version, Wingle (Fengjun) high-end pickup, and other vehicles. GWM GW4D20 diesel engine uses five advanced technologies, such as dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), electronically controlled high pressure common rail, VGT turbocharged intercooler, EGR system and automatic valve clearance compensator, which has been created the 4 No.1 of “the highest emission standards”, “highest power, highest torque”, “best noise control” and “energy-saving and low-cost optimal” in China diesel engine field.

There are many variants in the GW4D20 series engine currently on the market, such as the earliest GW4D20 and GW4D20B. the main ones in China market are the are GW4D20D and GW4D20E that meets the China-V emission standards, as well as the latest GW4D20T equipped on the Haval H9.

The GW4D20/GW4D20B turbocharged diesel engine is 4-cylinder in line, 4-stroke, 16-air valve, double overhead camshaft (DOHC), turbocharged (VGT, WGT), air intake intercooled vehicle engine, and adopts advanced technologies such as the electric control high-pressure common-rail system, electric control EGR system, etc; it features good power performance, high economical efficiency, high reliability, excellent performance at both high and low speeds, quick low-temperature startup, etc., and its emission conforms to China IV Vehicle Exhaust Emission Standard (The latest GW4D20M has met the China-VI emission standard).

The main difference between GW4D20 and GW4D20B
  1. Turbocharger, GW4D20 uses BorgWarner’s turbocharger, GW4D20B is the turbocharger from from Shanghai MHI; ERG and intercooler are also different, the different turbocharger affects the performance of the engine.
  2. GW4D20 uses VGT turbo, Delphi common rail system, while GW4D20B adopts WGT turbo, China-made common rail. The VGT is a variable-section turbocharger that starts operating at low rpm in order to reduce the acceleration response time at low speed, currently many small passenger cars use this turbocharger; The WGT turbocharger for GW4D20B is a fixed geometry turbocharger and is generally used on large construction trucks. It controls the maximum pressure of the boost through a bypass valve to ensure that the engine is working properly, this shortcoming is that there is a significant delay in acceleration.

Torque of GW4D20 reaches 220N.m at 1100 rpm, , the torque exceed 300N.m at 1500 rpm, It can be maintained above 300N.m until 3600rpm, it falls below 300N.m, which is a very beautiful torque curve. Performance of 4D20B is much worse by comparing to GW4D20, the starting torque is only 170N.m at 1100 rpm, the maximum torque reaches at about 1700 rpm, and max. torque is only maintained at around 2900 rpm and then begins to fall.

GW4D20D or GW4D20E

The currently selling in China market GW4D20D or GW4D20E are the ones upgraded the emission standard, meeting the China-V emission standards, the max. power of GW4D20D is slightly reduced, the GW4D20E is a lower-powered version of GW4D20D, we can see from the technical parameters directly, the maximum power output and torque of GW4D20E are much lower than GW4D20D.


GW4D20T engine is the high-end version of 4D20 series products independently developed by GWM. The emission standard can meet the European V+ or China-V level and has the potential to upgrade the Euro VI standard. GW4D20T is an enhanced version, the max. power is increased from 110kW/4000rpm to 140kW/4000rpm, the max. torque also increased to even amazing 450Nm.

The 4D20T is the first in China and the world’s rare four-cylinder diesel engine with two turbochargers. The reason for applying two turbos, simply say, the small turbo to shorten turbo response time and allow the boost at lower rpm; it will switch to the large turbo or even two turbos work simultaneously at medium and high loads, in order to achieve higher boost pressures at high speed, the control mechanisms and logic parts are much more complex than ordinary single-turbo engine.

The specific driving experience, switching from Haval H9 gasoline version to H9 diesel version, under the same road conditions, we may feel obvious difference when the accelerator pedal stepped down, the same torque generated at 1000rpm on Haval H9 diesel version while gasoline version will be 1600rpm, the torque output is abundant on Haval H9 diesel version. Diesel engine has advantage on torque and fuel consumption at low speed or low REV (1000-2000rpm) I city congested or off-road conditions.
