Volkswagen Group China has officially secured a Level 3 autonomous driving road test license in Hefei, marking a significant milestone in the automaker’s advanced autonomous driving deployment strategy.

Following the license approval, Volkswagen has commenced real-world road testing and data collection for its L3 technology in Hefei. This progress keeps the company on track to achieve its goal of making L3 autonomous driving technology ready by 2027.

The announcement coincides with the inaugural Volkswagen Group China Technology Day, scheduled for October 28 in Hefei, where the company will showcase its latest research and development achievements.

Additionally, Volkswagen announced plans to launch six new models based on the CMP platform in China over the next 18 months. Designed specifically for Chinese consumers, the highly flexible CMP platform supports both battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains, targeting mainstream segments.
Models such as the ID.AURA L5 and ID. ERA 5X have already debuted, signaling the scaled implementation of Volkswagen’s first locally developed new energy vehicle platform. All CMP-based models will feature Volkswagen’s CEA electronic and electrical architecture, incorporating AI-powered smart cockpits, advanced Level 2+ driver assistance systems, and rapid OTA updates completed in just 30 minutes every 100 days.
