Kaiyi (Cowin) Kunlun is just a cheaper sibling of Tiggo 8

On March 20, the all-new model of Kaiyi Auto (formerly Cowin) – Kaiyi Kunlun was officially launched. The new SUV launched a total of 7 models with a price range of 99,900 to 149,900 yuan. At the same time, the official announced that the pre-sale of the hybrid version will be launched simultaneously, and a total of 3 models will be launched, with a pre-sale price range of 159,900 to 239,900 yuan. The new car is built on the i-FA platform.

In terms of appearance, Kaiyi Kunlun features the latest design style of the family. The front grille occupies a large part of the front face. At the same time, the internal structure adopts a matrix design, combining the sharp headlights on both sides and the LED daytime running light strip, presenting a very radical visual effect.

In terms of body size, the length, width, and height of the new car are 4738/1968/1708mm respectively, and the wheelbase is 2820mm, which is a bit larger than Tiggo 8. Kaiyi Kunlun provides 5-seater or 7-seater layout.

In the interior, Kaiyi Kunlun does not use the current popular dual-screen design, the overall design is relatively simple. The central control display is located slightly lower. The infotainment system is equipped with Huawei Hicar and Tencent TAI 4.0 ecology, combined with intelligent voice. In terms of automatic driving assistance, the new car can currently achieve L2 automatic driving assistance, and can also be upgraded through OTA.

In terms of power, the fuel version is powered by 1.6T and 2.0T engines, which is same as Tiggo 8. The former has a maximum power of 145 kW and a peak torque of 290 Nm; the latter has a maximum power of 187 kW and a peak torque of 390 Nm. In addition, the new car will also provide a plug-in hybrid version. The system is composed of a 1.5T engine and an E-motor, and provides two different versions of single motor and dual motors. The maximum power of the single motor version is 150 kilowatts. The maximum power of the dual-motor version is 270 kilowatts, and the pure electric cruising range is 110 kilometers, 180 kilometers, and 260 kilometers respectively.

Speaking of the relationship between Kaiyi (Cowin) and Chery, it is like Skoda and Jetta to Volkswagen.

From the perspective of product strength, the biggest value and selling point of Kaiyi Kunlun is that it relies on Chery’s technical resources, combined with an affordable price, it has a good competitiveness among models of the same level.

Take the Kaiyi Kunlun with a price of 119,900 yuan and the Tiggo 8 with a price of 116,900 yuan as an example. Both models have the same power system, and the level of configuration is also comparable. The only advantage of Kaiyi Kunlun is the body size and wheelbase. There are also 5/7 seat versions available. For some consumers, the price difference is more attractive.

At present, Kaiyi Auto has models including Cowin V7, Cowin X3, X5, Cowin Xuandu and Cowin Xuanjie and etc., total 6 models, all of which focus on the market segment below 100,000 yuan. Compared with competing models, it is at a disadvantage in terms of design, configuration, and quality. They have not achieved good market performance under the general trend of consumption upgrading.
