Mazda has officially filed a trademark application for “SKYACTIV-Z HEV,” signaling the introduction of its next-generation hybrid powertrain technology. This new system is slated to debut in the all-new Mazda CX-5 in 2027, with potential applications for the next-generation Mazda 3 and CX-3 models.

The “SKYACTIV-Z” designation refers to a new engine architecture specifically engineered for hybrid integration. Preliminary information indicates the system will be built around a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine paired with Mazda’s proprietary hybrid technology. The powertrain is expected to deliver a combined output exceeding 300 horsepower. Notably, the system is being developed to comply with the world’s most stringent emissions regulations, including Euro VII and North American LEV IV standards. The “HEV” suffix explicitly highlights the hybrid nature of this new technology.

Official images of the international-spec all-new CX-5 have also surfaced. The most significant exterior update is the adoption of a bold, squared-off front grille, complemented by sharp, uniquely styled LED daytime running lights. The front bumper design emphasizes a youthful and sporty aesthetic. The new model has grown in size, with the wheelbase extended to 2,775mm, which should translate into improved rear-seat legroom.

At the rear, the CX-5 retains a traditional SUV silhouette rather than a fastback design, projecting a solid and stable stance. The taillights feature a slender, angular profile with intricate internal detailing, highlighted by red light guides that ensure high visibility and a distinctive signature.

Inside, the cabin features a symmetrical dashboard layout designed to enhance the sense of width. A three-spoke steering wheel, adorned with the “MAZDA” wordmark, adds a touch of refinement. The interior is equipped with a digital instrument cluster and a large central infotainment display.

While official performance figures for the SKYACTIV-Z HEV-equipped CX-5 remain under wraps, the standard internal combustion version for international markets is expected to feature a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, producing 189 horsepower.
