Marked the groundbreaking ceremony for BYD‘s passenger vehicle plant in Cambodia, the first new energy vehicle (EV) production base in the country. This milestone signifies the commencement of BYD Auto’s localized operations in Cambodia. Strategically positioned, the plant will not only cater to the Cambodian market but also serve as an export hub to other Southeast Asian nations, becoming BYD’s second production base in the region following its Thailand facility.

Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, announced that the BYD Cambodia passenger vehicle plant boasts an annual production capacity of 10,000 units and is scheduled to commence production in the fourth quarter of this year. According to BYD’s plan, 10 brand dealerships will be established in Cambodia by the end of the year. Notably, the flagship store located on Phnom Penh’s Hun Sen Boulevard spans 15,000 square meters, making it the largest automotive dealership in Cambodia.

BYD has garnered significant popularity in the local market, evidenced by a remarkable 521% year-on-year increase in orders in Cambodia during the first quarter of this year. As a testament to this demand, BYD emerged as the top-selling automotive brand at the Phnom Penh White Palace Auto Show, Cambodia’s largest auto exhibition held from March 1st to 2nd, capturing 24% of the total orders.

The surge in BYD’s sales is underpinned by supportive local policies. The Cambodian government views BYD’s investment as a crucial step towards economic diversification. Through the “Electric Vehicle Sector Development Policy (2024-2030),” the government provides incentives such as tax exemptions and support for charging infrastructure development, aiming to achieve a national EV ownership target of 30,000 vehicles by 2030. The establishment of this plant is projected to create 300 jobs and foster the training of local technical talent.
