China-Exclusive Audi EVs Surface in Germany via Parallel Imports, Undercutting Local Models

A unique cross-border automotive trend has emerged, as two Audi electric vehicles specifically developed for the Chinese market are now making their way into Germany via parallel import channels. This unexpected development has sparked significant debate within the European automotive industry.

The models in question are the Audi E5 Sportback and the Audi E7X. These vehicles were developed through a joint venture between Audi and SAIC Motor, tailored exclusively for Chinese consumers, and were never intended for release in the European market.

The parallel import process involves purchasing the vehicles in China, shipping them to Germany, and completing local road-compliance certification. These logistical steps have significantly inflated the final retail prices. The Audi E5 Sportback is currently listed at €59,980 (approx. $66,500), while the higher-positioned Audi E7X SUV starts at €72,900 (approx. $80,800). These figures represent nearly double the original starting prices in China, which are 205,900 RMB (approx. $28,800) and 269,800 RMB (approx. $37,700), respectively.

Despite the substantial price hike, these China-exclusive models are being touted for their competitive value proposition. For comparison, the locally produced Audi S6 Sportback e-tron starts at €99,500 ($110,300) and reportedly offers lower performance than the imported E5 Sportback. Similarly, the Audi SQ6 e-tron, which is considered less luxurious than the E7X, carries a starting price of €93,800 ($104,000).

Industry experts warn that German consumers face significant risks when purchasing these parallel imports. Drawing parallels to a 2023 legal case involving Volkswagen, where the automaker successfully sued to halt the sale of imported Chinese-spec ID.6 models—resulting in a court order to destroy 20 units—Audi could potentially take similar legal action. Furthermore, owners of these imported vehicles are unlikely to receive official maintenance or service support from Audi.
