On May 7, SAIC Volkswagen officially announced that the second model in its ID. ERA series will be named the “ID. ERA 5S.” This new vehicle marks a significant milestone as the Volkswagen brand’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) intelligent family sedan and its first global model to feature advanced urban Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) capabilities. The vehicle comes standard with the “Xingyun” intelligent driving assistance system and the “Yunqi” intelligent cockpit.

Previously leaked spy shots revealed a sporty, coupe-like design. The front fascia shares design cues with the ID. ERA 9X, featuring a split headlight configuration. The upper section consists of a full-width daytime running light bar that integrates seamlessly with the Volkswagen logo in the center. The lower headlight clusters are cleverly integrated into the air intake ducts, and the front bumper includes a functional grille.

Along the side profile, the car features semi-flush door handles and a distinctive five-spoke wheel design.

In terms of powertrain, while official specs are pending, the model is expected to leverage the 800V high-voltage platform similar to the ID. ERA 9X. It is anticipated to utilize an EA211 1.5T plug-in hybrid system. For reference, the 9X boasts a dual-motor setup with a combined output of 380kW and a CLTC-rated pure electric range of 406km; the ID. ERA 5S is expected to offer competitive performance figures.

Spy shots also indicate the use of lightweight hollow control arms paired with coil springs and shock absorbers, confirming a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension setup.
