On April 21, during the Volkswagen Group Night, the Jetta brand officially unveiled its first new energy concept car, the JETTA X. This debut marks the brand’s comprehensive transition toward electrification and signals Jetta’s readiness to compete in the entry-level new energy vehicle (NEV) market. Jetta plans to launch four NEV models by 2028, with the brand’s first electrified product set to hit the market later this year.
The JETTA X concept introduces a refreshed brand logo that is more minimalist and modern while retaining heritage elements. Adopting the “Modern Robust” design language, the vehicle breaks away from Jetta’s traditional internal combustion engine design framework, embracing a more futuristic and youthful aesthetic. The front fascia is particularly striking, featuring sharp lines and high-tech daytime running lights that set the design tone for future production models.

The design de-emphasizes the traditional grille, using decorative trim to connect the left and right light clusters. The front bumper incorporates “X” elements to highlight its crossover identity. The side profile features a floating roof, semi-hidden door handles, and muscular flared wheel arches, giving it a planted and athletic stance.

At the rear, the JETTA X features a through-type taillight design with an illuminated Jetta logo at the center, echoing the high-tech look of the headlights. The rear bumper also incorporates crossover-inspired elements to complete the rugged yet modern look.

The launch of the JETTA X is a strategic move aligned with Volkswagen Group’s global electrification goals and a deep dive into the Chinese local market. Volkswagen previously indicated that by 2030, compact models are expected to account for half of the NEV market. Specifically, entry-level NEVs priced around 100,000 RMB ($13,880) will be the primary drivers of market growth. Jetta is positioning itself in this segment by focusing on three core pillars: electrification, digitalization, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

This shift means Jetta’s future NEVs will challenge the perception that “entry-level” equals “poorly equipped.” By competing directly with Chinese domestic NEV brands, Jetta will offer digital cockpits and advanced smart driving features. Leveraging Volkswagen Group’s technical expertise and cost-control advantages, the brand aims to provide German-engineered quality at a highly competitive price point.

Supporting this transformation is a new corporate structure. On January 14, FAW-VW Jetta Auto Technology Co., Ltd. was officially established, upgrading Jetta from a product brand to a full-value-chain technology company. This new entity has been granted greater R&D autonomy and faster decision-making power to develop smart EVs tailored to Chinese consumers while maintaining a seamless connection to Volkswagen’s global platforms and FAW’s mature supply chain.
According to the strategic roadmap, Jetta will launch five new models by 2028, four of which will be NEVs. While the brand’s first electric product arrives this year, the production version of the JETTA X is expected to officially launch in 2026. Jetta has set a medium-term goal of reaching an annual production and sales volume of approximately 400,000 units, aiming for a smooth transition from the fuel era to the new energy era.
