At present, the company’s first complete China version of the Model 3 white body has been rolled out at the factory and is expected to be delivered by the end of the year. Tesla’s “No. 3 Super Factory” started construction in January this year and plans to complete construction work by this summer. Recent drone video shows that Tesla has completed most of the construction work for this giant building earlier this summer, and now it focuses on the installation and commissioning of the plant’s internal production equipment.
Earlier, Elon Musk said that the “No. 3 Super Factory” in Shanghai will produc 3,000 Model 3 per week before the end of this year, tor the 12 months prior to June 30, 2020, the Shanghai plant’s goal is to produce more than 500,000 electric vehicles.
Tesla has been preparing for the launch of Shanghai’s “No. 3 Super Factory” at an extremely fast speed. In recent weeks, it has been reported that Tesla’s executives in charge of the project are intensively visiting Shanghai, the company is preparing for the final sprint before the factory is put into production.
From the perspective of suppliers, it also shows that the Tesla Shanghai plant will officially start mass production soon. Tesla’s long-time glass supplier Saint-Gobain Sekurit confirmed that the company has established a glass factory in the Lingang Industrial Zone to produce front and rear windshields and glass roofs for the Model 3. With the launch of the Model 3, the plant also plans to start mass production on October 14 to catch up with Tesla’s production schedule.
It is reported that Tesla Shanghai factory takes only 8 months from groundbreaking to official production. As the first foreign auto manufacturer to wholly own a car manufacturing plant in China, Tesla’s second global super factory fully reflects the “Shanghai speed and port service”, which means that the commissioning of the Tesla Shanghai plant will be an important milestone, reflecting the significant improvement in the service capacity of domestic automotive production for the smart car industry.
The plant integrates R&D, manufacturing and sales functions, it is estimated that after 2-3 years, it will reach the annual production capacity of 500,000 pure electric vehicles, and the initial output value will reach RMB 120 million.
Currently, the plant produces models including Model 3 and Model Y, the vehicles produced will be sold only in China. The head of the plant said it is considering increasing investment to continue to expand production capacity to meet the Model Y that will be produced in China next year.
Model X, Model S, and the high-performance versions of Model Y and Model 3 will still be produced in the US and imported into China. At that time, the China-produced Model 3 with a price of 328,000 will compete directly with the NIO ES6, Xpeng P7, and the Leading Ideal ONE, the main target customers of these models will be young and small-capital youth consumers.
