XPeng announced it has received approval for L4 autonomous driving demonstration operations in Guangzhou, marking a significant step towards commercial deployment of its Robotaxi service.
With this license, XPeng’s Robotaxi, branded as “Youyou,” can now operate across the entire Guangzhou region. This achievement transitions the service from technical validation to operational and business model testing. XPeng stated that the approval will facilitate real-world operational validation and the refinement of a replicable service system, laying the groundwork for exporting its integrated solutions to global partners and exploring large-scale commercialization of Robotaxi services.
The advancement of XPeng’s Robotaxi business is built upon its extensive experience in intelligent vehicle technology and mass production capabilities. The Youyou Robotaxi is based on the XPeng G9, and it is China’s first fully self-developed, mass-produced Robotaxi. It is equipped with four self-developed Turing AI chips, delivering an effective computing power of 3000 TOPS, and features XPeng’s second-generation VLA large model. Leveraging its proprietary chips, large models, and AI infrastructure, XPeng is extending its technological expertise from intelligent vehicles to L4 autonomous driving scenarios, aiming to support various levels of autonomous driving products with a unified technical framework.
According to the head of XPeng’s Robotaxi business, the team will continue to validate operational capabilities and optimize user experience. During the initial phase of the demonstration operation, Youyou will gradually become available through invitation codes, steadily expanding its service area while prioritizing safety.
For Robotaxi services, demonstration operations signify more than just further validation of autonomous driving capabilities; they represent the integration of the product into a real-world mobility service system. The vehicle’s ability to reliably complete driving tasks is only one component. The seamless coordination of order response, vehicle dispatching, passenger pick-up and drop-off, service procedures, and emergency handling are equally crucial for sustained operation.
The acquisition of this demonstration operation license provides XPeng Youyou with the conditions to further validate these capabilities in Guangzhou. As the service progresses, the team will refine vehicle operations and service processes based on actual travel demands, accumulating operational experience in areas such as vehicle utilization rates, dispatch efficiency, service costs, and fleet management. This data will inform future product optimization, operational efficiency improvements, and the exploration of sustainable business models.
Unlike traditional deployment methods that require extensive customization for different cities, XPeng aims to enhance the adaptability of its Robotaxi across diverse road environments and traffic scenarios through the reuse of its model capabilities and technical framework. This approach is intended to provide a foundation for cross-city and cross-market deployment.
